Tom! My best friend graduated in May and works for a defense contractor out west. He's been searching for a second gen Cayman S for months and he finally found one he really likes at a dealership in MD. He had them take it to the Porsche dealer for inspection and the car checks out nice. They agreed on a price and his dad will drive up from the southeast to pick it up and bring it home. BUT now the dealer is trying to stick him with an $800 "reconditioning fee" which includes a couple hundred for MD inspection which is required for it to be sold as well as cleaning it up. But the vehicle is absolutely spotless inside and out so he really gets nothing for his 800 bucks. He told the dealer to pound sand but they say they are happy to sell it to someone else. What should he do??? Pictured: the car

Steve Lehto might have some tips, too. You can find him here and on twitter.

I say let them sell it to someone else. They should of figured that into the price if it's not negotiable.

MD inspection is not required unless it's being registered in the state. That said, it may have already been performed. Reconditioning fee ostensibly covers all the detailing/inspections/fluid top offs/whatever that have already been done to make it lot worthy. I imagine if you peruse their listings there's a statement to the likes of 'documentation and reconditioning fees are not included in the price' so your friend doesn't really have any leverage.

So the question: is 800 dollars on a >40k (ie 2%) car worth walking for?

"I will not buy this car with the $800 fee on it."

Tell them you understand the reconditioning fee is part of their process and you understand it needs to be charged to every vehicle, but you felt that you were misled by it not being disclosed in the price. Offer to pay the fee if they reduce the price of the car by $800. Tell them if they can do this and email you a sales agreement, you'll sign it and email it back and have a certified check for the deposit in the mail tomorrow.

It sounds silly to offer it that way since it's all the same for you in the end, but coming from the dealer operations perspective the fees and payment for the car actually go in different places, and certain higher-ups get pissy if the fees on a certain car don't get paid.

Not to say your friend is being a jerk, but we get people acting like jerks to us all the time. When we get people telling us to go pound sand our response is pretty much what you just summed up. When people are polite to us and state their position in a reasonable way, that's when we really go the extra mile. Remember you attract more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Thanks for the tips! When I said go pound sand those were really my words and was just me being over the top. I'm sure he was perfectly reasonable with them he doesn't have a bad bone in his body.
